1991 Land Rover 127 (Ex. UN)

About

This build started with a great foundation — a well-maintained Land Rover 130 military ambulance that has since been converted into a camper. The only weak point was the ageing 3.5 Rover V8 under the bonnet, so we gave it the upgrade it deserved. The result is a high-performance daily driver that keeps all the iconic character of the original Defender.

How it started

When the vehicle first arrived at our workshop, it was a standard 3.5 litre rover V8 and being honest we struggled to fully lift the clutch on our hill.

Our customer was looking for a significant upgrade-something far more refined and capable of keeping pace with modern motorway traffic.

To meet those expectations, they provided us with a 2006 535d (Twin turbo) e61 for us to use the engine so the work began.

Engine Servicing

Before going in, the engine received all the essential maintenance to ensure long-term reliability — a new timing chain, fresh seals, and gaskets throughout. The customer didn't want the ultimate speed machine, afterall it's a big bus to stop if you're going fast.

We focused on reliablity and ensuring that the commonly unreliable twin turbos were ready for their new job of proppelling an ambulance.

Gearbox Spec

To make the most of the new engine’s performance and improve overall drivability, the customer opted for the 6HP-28X six-speed automatic gearbox — a huge upgrade over the manual transmission the vehicle originally arrived with.

We then finished the shifter installation using one of our pre-built centre consoles, paired with the MW Machines air actuator kit for the high-low ratio and diff lock controls, keeping the interior neat, functional, and factory-looking.

The end result is an effortless driving experience — smooth, refined, and enjoyable, without the constant battle of a heavy clutch pedal.

A lot of time went into getting every detail right, but the finished drivetrain feels as though it was built that way from the factory.

Extras

Alongside the performance upgrades, the dashboard also needed to deliver the functionality and driver information expected from a modern vehicle. To achieve this, we fitted a Flatcap Engineering Data Display.

These touchscreen information panels provide the driver with clear, real-time vehicle data, including:

  • RPM

  • Gear

  • Coolant temperature

  • Gearbox temperature

  • Battery voltage

  • Rail pressure (actual and requested)

  • Manifold pressure (actual and requested)

  • Fuel consumption (litres per hour)

  • Throttle position

  • Fuel temperature

  • Exhaust gas temperature

  • Engine torque

  • Cruise control active indicator (compatible with our cruise control kits)
